Chapter Seventeen

As Ivy stood outside with Hero, watching him do his business on a small patch of grass near the hospital, she saw Jonathan’s car pull into a nearby parking spot. After notifying Nat of the situation—and conveniently tucking the conversation she needed to have with the woman away—she’d called him on the way to the hospital to let him know she wouldn’t be in this morning and to start without her. She hadn’t expected him to actually show up.

“Hey,” he said, trotting up, shooting a quick glance at Hero. “What’s the news? Is he ok?”

“Still waiting to hear,” Ivy said. “They’re still evaluating him. Jonathan, he was beat to hell. Someone really took it out on him.”

“Robbery?” Jonathan asked.

“I couldn’t tell, it was so crazy over there,” she replied. “Wilcox is working on it.”

“That’s good,” Jonathan replied. “He’s reliable. How did you find out he’d even been attacked?”

Ivy swallowed. She hadn’t been looking forward to this. “I went over there to see if he could help with the case. I thought maybe he could cut down on some of the names on Rouge’s ledger.”

Jonathan nodded, though it was obvious he wanted to say something about Ivy’s decision. Instead, he motioned to Hero. “Is he ok?”

“Seems to be,” she said. “He isn’t injured as far as I can tell. But maybe I should take him to the vet anyway to make sure? I don’t know. I’ve never had a dog before.”

“You have to pick that up, you know,” Jonathan said, pointing at what Hero had left behind. The little dog kicked up some of the grass as he finished his business.

Ivy sighed. “Here,” she said, handing Hero’s leash to Jonathan. She pulled a glove from her pocket and deftly picked up the remains, depositing them in a nearby trash can. “I’m going to head back inside. Are you ok working the case on your own today? I don’t want to leave until I get an update.”

“I’ll stay with you,” he said. “We can keep going through the list. Might take your mind off things.”

She nodded. Hero led the way back into the hospital through the automatic doors. “I just can’t figure out who would want to attack Oliver,” she said as they walked. “What do you think he was into?”

“Could be anything,” Jonathan said. “He runs in dangerous circles with dangerous people.”

“But he always keeps himself anonymous,” she said. “That’s kind of the point. So people couldn’t find him.”

“Looks like he ran into someone as good, if not better than he was.”

Ivy didn’t want to think of the implications of that. Oliver was a pro at computers, something that had always eluded Ivy. If he’d gotten himself in with someone who was even better, then he could have a target on his back for the rest of his life. But they could worry about that later. Right now she just wanted to make sure he would see tomorrow.

As they headed back into the waiting room, a doctor was emerging from the double doors leading to the back.
